"Big Boys Don't Cry"

“Easy, Breezy, Beautiful…CoverGirl”

We all have heard this infamous phrase that brings many phenomenal and incredibly beautiful women to mind, such as Rihanna, Katy Perry, Janelle Monáe, and Zendaya; but ladies and gentlemen, if you haven’t heard already, allow me to announce that the LGBTQ+ community has broken through yet another barrier!

I have two words for you … James Charles. Yes, we’ve had other members of the LGBTQ+ community become CoverGirls, such as Queen Latifah and Ellen DeGeneres, but there’s none other like this 17-year-old make-up artist from New York. I’m sure you’ve caught the drift already, but let me take a moment to officially introduce the first male CoverGirl.

You may be the one to ask, “what is this?” Well, this is an amazing young man reaching a height that was once unreachable. Yet, let me also ask you if you would be proud of your son for doing the same thing? Or would you rather lose him to his dream? A moment that you’re supposed to be so proud of, yet you decide to become another “wow” and “smh” owner of perception.

“What is the world coming to?” I urge you. Please do not let your narrow mindedness blur your vision from something so iconic. To my feminists who have yelled, “Women can’t have anything,” from the mountain top, you are one of the very reasons why this was done. Oh, how easy it is for us to throw in the double-standard card when we’re approached with scenarios that are uniquely different. To those of you who claim, “It’s called ‘covergirl’ not ‘coverpeople’”, don’t allow your judgment to stemmed by labels and nourished by ignorance.

“I’m confused…” Well, actually you really aren’t. You’re definitely fully aware of what this collaboration stands for. James Charles has become yet another example of how to break gender roles and be comfortable with yourself while doing so - as he is an openly gay male. He also effortlessly proves that, although severely overshadowed, men can do and wear make-up, too. He is only a piece to the puzzle, yet, he but brings so much light to what many people have been distracted from for so long.

CoverGirl Cosmetics has once again proved to not only be a trendsetter BUT also willing to adjust to the current times and idealistic growth of our society. CoverGirl took a chance to show acceptance and wholeheartedly stands behind their functional ideal of “Our CoverGirls are role models and boundary-breakers, fearlessly expressing themselves, standing up for what they believe.”

Well, Mr. James Charles, Congratulations! You have definitely solidified yourself as a role model across the world and this is definitely the start of something remarkable!
