RuPaul Charles, the iconic queen and host of the Emmy-award winning show Drag Race, revealed to Ross Matthews on Wednesday in an interview with Hollywood Today Live that he and his boyfriend of 23 years, Georges LeBar, are actually married!
“I don’t think I’ve ever said this on television before. We are married.”
The two met in 1994 at a popular New York City gay club called Limelight on LeBar’s birthday. RuPaul confessed in a 2013 interview on “Oprah: Where Are They Now?” that he couldn’t help but notice Georges, who stands at a powerful 6’7”, “dancing like a maniac” on the dance floor which persuaded him to jokingly go over and ask LeBar, “What are you going through?”
Who is this lucky guy? Georges LeBar owns a 60,000-acre ranch that spans across two states – Wyoming and South Dakota. According to RuPaul, his Australian partner could care less about show business as he prefers to spend most of his time on the ranch in Wyoming which RuPaul frequently visits and calls “the most isolated place on Earth.”
The couple married in January on the 23rd anniversary of when they met, but originally were never planning to wed. In 2015, RuPaul informed BuzzFeed about his view on marriage: “No, I don’t stand on ceremony, I never want to conform to anything. Is he devoted to me? Am I devoted to him? Hell yes. But I never want to be like everybody else.” Since then, the pair changed their minds not only for tax breaks and other financial reasons but because of what’s going on politically in regards to the current administration’s view on gay marriage and LGBTQ+ rights.
Shortly after the announcement was made, the social media world quickly erupted with both favorable and not-so-favorable excitement. He responded to the mixed responses via Twitter by sharing an old picture of him and LeBar (below) with the following caption, “Thank you all for the love and kindness. ‘I cry not for myself, but for those who never felt the joy we felt’- The Supremes ‘I Hear A Symphony.”
Congratulations to the newlyweds!
