Magic Johnson Opens Up to Ellen About His Son Coming Out

Basketball legend and Hall of Famer, Magic Johnson, appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show last Wednesday and expressed how he felt about his son coming out as gay.

“When my son came out, I was so happy for him and happy for us as parents; and we love him – EJ is amazing.”

Earvin Johnson III, known as EJ, came out to his parents when he was just a teen, but he broke the internet when he came out publicly in April 2013 when he was spotted walking and holding hands with his then-boyfriend on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles at the age of 20. That moment was not only monumental for EJ, but for his family, too, as he had the complete support of his parents. When Ellen inquired about any advice Magic would give to other parents regarding their child’s sexuality, he was clear in his push for love and acceptance.

“I think it’s all about you not trying to decide what your daughter or son should be or what you want them to become. It’s all about loving them – no matter who they are or what they decide to do … it’s so many people who try to discriminate against them, so they need you to support them, ‘cause if you don’t support them, who’s going to support them AND love them?”

Magic's interview with Ellen:

In September 2016, Earvin and Earlitha, known as Magic and Cookie Johnson, sat down with Robin Roberts from Good Morning America to discuss Cookie’s most recent memoir, “Believing in Magic: My Story of Love, Overcoming Adversity, and Keeping Faith.” It not only discusses the aftermath of Magic’s public media announcement of his HIV-positive status in 1991 (a time when it was largely seen as only affecting gay men and drug addicts) while Cookie was two months pregnant but also tells the story of their journey of coming to terms with their son EJ’s sexuality. Magic was very honest about how he initially had a hard time accepting it as he didn’t want his son to be gay which led to him saying some things that he later apologized to him for.

“I had to come to realize that this is who he is and he is going to be happy. I knew he was looking for me (as his father) to accept who he was and I had to get out of my own way and my macho mentality.”

Caitlyn Jenner Blames Ellen DeGeneres for Alienating Her from the LGBTQ+ Community

In Caitlyn Jenner’s new memoir, The Secrets of My Life, she accuses Ellen DeGeneres of turning the LGBTQ+ community away from her.

The 67-year-old transgender reality star calls out DeGeneres for making her look narrow-minded and misconstruing her views on same-sex marriage after appearing on her show for an interview in 2015 shortly after transitioning. When their conversation began to touch on politics regarding the LGBTQ+ community, Caitlyn admitted to once being hesitant to accept same-sex marriage.

“I have to admit that I remember 15 years ago, 20 years ago, whenever it was that the whole gay marriage issue came up – I was not for it. I thought … I am a traditionalist. I mean, I’m older than most people in the audience. I kind of like tradition and it’s always been a man and a woman, and I’m thinking, I don’t quite get it.”

Although she continued by stating that her views have changed over time, Ellen, who felt like Jenner wasn’t truly happy with the concept of marriage equality, responded by questioning the sincerity of her support. Caitlyn was sure to tell the talk show host that she was on board with gay marriage as it will ‘pretty soon be the law of the land,’ but Ellen remained unconvinced as she later confessed in a radio interview with Howard Stern that she felt Caitlyn’s views were ‘confusing’ and she ‘still had a judgement.’

According to Radar Online, in her memoir, Caitlyn writes that she believes Ellen baited her into discussing her controversial views and proceeded to twist her words. She felt like DeGeneres took what she said even further out of context during her appearance on The Howard Stern Show and ‘made it go viral’ which ultimately ‘further alienated’ her from the LGBTQ+ community. She also stated that her interview with Ellen was edited and did not include her further explaining that she does support same-sex marriage.

This comes on the heels of Caitlyn accusing Kris Jenner (previously married to for 23 years when she identified as Bruce Jenner) of forcing her to live a lie as a man and Robert Kardashian, Sr. (Kris Jenner’s late ex-husband prior to Bruce) of knowingly defending O. J. Simpson even though he knew he was a murderer partly because he was jealous Kris had moved on. It appears as if Caitlyn won’t be making friends and playing nice anytime soon as the book is officially set to release on April 25th.
